What are infographics? Understanding the benefits of infographics and their purpose

“Infographics” is a bit of a buzz word in the industry. We generally explain it in person to our clients who are interested in the service. The video post below is generally how we describe it.

We pulled the video into words, and here it is:

Hi, it’s Liam. I just thought I’d explain very briefly the whole world of infographics.

It’s probably a word that you’re not too familiar with at the moment, or have been in the past. I wanted to just explain it a little bit more. Chances are you’ve probably seen them around and about, but you don’t know how you can apply that to your business or what benefits it can bring, so I’ll briefly explain that.

I’ve got a very crude drawing of an infographic – so infographic designers don’t panic; I’m not treading on your territory. We got kind of a long image, and what you’ll often find is lots of graphs, interesting stats. The idea of an infographic is that it takes relatively complex data, and explains them in an interesting way.

There’s a great one about the size of the American debt – the deficit that they have – looking at how big the piles of money would be if you were to pile them up. The American debt is trillions and trillions of dollars. If you were to pile those up, they’d been higher than a couple of skyscrapers, and that kind of thing. Amazing; you should check that one out.

Anyway, it’s explaining large sums of data in an interesting format that people would like to share. That particular infographic got loads of shares on social networks because, of course, it’s an in-thing and it’s something that people would say, “Have you seen that? That puts it into perspective for me. That’s amazing.” Each time that is shared and spread around the web, there’s a web link at the bottom to the person that’s produced it.

Often, when we’re producing infographics on behalf of our clients, it’s the infographic related to their industry. Let’s say our client was a sportswear manufacturer, and the Olympics coming up around the corner, you could have a massive infographic about the history of the Olympics.

You could use stats such as the amount of running that will be carried out at the Olympics – “You could run around the world three times,” whatever – explain lots of stuff – “The number of calories burned is this, this, this and this” – and explain it in an interesting way.

It applies to any business. You can pick a related market, a vertical market, any market that is related, and produced an infographic about it. The idea is, with a bit of outreach – you say to a local blog, “Would you be interested in featuring this piece of content?” They’re like, “Yeah, this is great for my readers.” Once they feature that, the stipulation is that they’ve got to put a link at the bottom to your website.

Again, I’ve talked about in other videos, the power of link-building and how you go about link-building. This is just another way of approaching that. It’s new, it’s in fashion, and the thing is it’s great content. It’s not a crap link on a business directory somewhere in wherever. It’s an actual great piece of content that’s taken time to produce, and Google loves it!

I hope that explains it. Again, what I would say is just get in touch with us and we can brainstorm some ideas as to how we can link infographics with your business, and we can work from there.

Thanks for watching. Speak to you soon.
